2011 Cruise and Show season is here

It seemed like it would never end, but the spring rains have washed off the winter salt and sand. More and more nicer cars are getting out on the road to be enjoyed by the driver and witnessed by the keen-eyed passerby.

Plans are in motion for the 4th Annual Kenny Johnson Memorial Cruise coming up in August. Save the date if you can.

August is a great month of the summer--you still have a good driving season left but you have had plenty of time to get your ride up and running and make it to the cruise.

We look forward to seeing you at all the events listed in our event calander. Get out there, but be easy on the gas--it isn't getting any cheaper.

Another great show at Broadway Pizza

The All American Show as at Broadway Pizza on May 1st earlier this year. They usually put on some big shows later in the year, with free admission for all spectators, but this one was a little earlier than normal. It was still great.

I have mentioned the soft spot I have for 1967 Fairlanes since they were my first car. This one made me emotional. The 390 GT was offered for only two years. I can't think of anything that would make this car better, beside me driving it down a lonely stretch of highway. On a Fairlane side note, the Nascar winning 427 was also offered in a few '67 Fairlanes, but it wasn't available in the GT model. You had to read the fine print in order to know that the 427 was offered. It was also cheaper to insure because it wasn't the sporty GT model. I love America.

The early '60s Impala was a fire-breathing beast. What I didn't mention earlier was HiTech Motorsports was providing dyno pulls at a really cheap price to all show cars. I think I heard this 454 big block roaring on the dyno before it pulled into this parking spot. I loved the cut-outs behind the front wheels and the cool F-85 Olds emblem giving up its life for this E-85 drinking Chevy.

There are many limited edition 2005 to present Ford Mustings: Steeda, Bullit, Mach 1, Saleen, etc. But a few of these were very limited and very, very powerful. This is a 2006 Shinoda Mustang. Larry Shinoda was one of the original designers of the Boss 302. This mustang pays homage to his creative force to make the greatest looking and greatest handling Ford Mustang of the Muscle Car Era.

You don't see many new fuel injected cars with ram air, but here you go. Also, everyone needs a supercharger and 550 horsepower.

The KJM 2010 Cruise is On

Almost three years ago now, the Kenny Johnson Memorial Show and Cruise was created to keep my uncle Kenny in the thoughts of his family and friends. That first year, we ran out of time for the cruise but put on a fine car show.

The following year, we ditched the cruise idea and put on another fine car show. This year, we are going back the other way. We will be keeping things simple this year with only a cruise. Those who want to participate will gather at a location yet-to-be-determined to chat and share memories and maybe have ice cream.

After that, we will go for a drive and possible stop somewhere for dinner. Post cards will be mailed out in the next few weeks to remind previous car show participants of this change.

Personally, I am mixed on this change. The main reason it was made is the other two shows going on in the area on that day. Another reason is that it is a lot of work and other obligations are making themselves know, especially this summer.

I look forward to seeing everyone bring out your muscle car, hot rod, and cruiser for the cruise.

Lastly, if you have nothing cool to drive, bring out that minivan! The more the merrier.

World of Wheels 2010 Pics part 2

There was a nice mix of hot rods, muscle cars, and cruisers at the show. I can't remember there being this many 'average' cars there--meaning ones that you and I could build/work-on/drive.

Here is a really slick custom bumper on the back of a rat rod. It looked simple to make, easy to fit, and just looked right. I'm not sure what it would protect you from, but I guess that can be overlooked for the increased style points.

Looking at the same rat, here is the header blockoff plate. It appears to be the front diff cover from an old rear end. Sweet.

Here is a twenty-two inch rim off a fully custom Chevy half-ton truck. I would think you would need to wear chainmail gloves when taking them on and off to avoid loosing a finger in the spiky teeth in the middle.

World of Wheels 2010 Pics

Well, I made it there. I wasn't planning on going, but the wife stayed with the wee ones feeling under the weather I went with my dad. It was smaller that some years, but there were more high-dollar cars.

Here are two pics for now:

I put wooden running boards on my old Chevy 4X4 several years ago. I did it more out of being too cheap to pay three hundred bucks for something I would knock off driving through the field behind my house than for a fashion statement. It is good to see some street rodders are doing the same.

And, when was the last time you saw a twin-turbo Buick in a street rod. Yes, I said a Buick.

Oh one more thing. We are near the beginning of planning for our show this year. What would you like to see? A full-blown show like we did the past two years? One big cruise night? One cruise night a month? Something completely different?

Other 50s Chevy's

It seems like every car maker took a big step away from what their previous model looked like when designing their 1958 model. Chevy was definitely on that page.

From every angle, the '58 differed from the '57. Some favor one year over the other, but I think they both look great.

This Impala owned by Steve and Marilyn O. have owned it since new (51 years!). It was restored back to original condition.

This Chevy sports the 348 big-block with some tri-power action under the hood and an auto tranny.

They drive it on the nicer days during the summer.

Shoe Box Chevy's, Part 2

The 1957 Chevy has to he the epitome of what a classic car is for the majority of car show enthusiasts. The fins, the hood rockets, the dash, the hungry grill...

Inside and out, the '57 has it going on.

And, thankfully, our show had one of the best examples of a street rodded '57. If you look below to some of the previous posts here, you will see a two-tone '55 Chevy. This black on black '57 looks great, too.

While not being too far away from stock, this street machine will get the job done with the aluminum-headed small-block engine under the hood.

Shoe Box Chevy's Part 1

The Shoe box Chevy's are called that due to their lack of curves. To the eye's of some, they are square and boxy. like a shoe box. I have always liked the look of the 1955, 1956, and 1957 Chevy.

This '55 belonging to Gary Klugow is perhaps the boxiest of the three years, but it sure just looks right.

Gary has owned this 210 Delray for over 25 years. It is equipped with the 283 V8 and the two-speed auto Powerglide tranny.

Show Trucks, Part 3

The mid-80s Chevy truck front-end has to have some of the cleanest lines of any pick-up ever. This 1984 version is no exception.

Jeremy B. bought this truck many years ago (ten to be exact) with the hopes of making something nice out of it. I think he was successful. This C-10 has the tried and true 350/350 combo. They aren't the original, but they get the job done a lot better.

In the future, Jeremy wants to supercharge this hauler. Here's to hoping gas prices don't get crazy again so he can still drive it once a week next summer.

Show Trucks, Part 2

In 1964, the MacLeod Family bought the very same Ford truck you see here on your computer screen. This '64 F-100 features a three-speed tranny and a 255 cubic inch engine.

It was restored to original condition and has been repainted. They drive the truck on nice days.

This is an uncommon body style that needs to be seen in person to be appreciated.

The Sapp Family was the first to arrive that slightly dreary day of our show, and this is what they brought: a nice old truck and a John Deere tractor.

The truck is a '48 F1, and the JD is a 1953 Model 60. Both are completely stock, and they plan to keep it that way.

This 1985 Chevy Suburban was rescused off a used car dealership bargin lot five years ago. The owner, Holli Johnson, took it home, tuned up the motor, and has been cruising with the family ever since. This half-ton, two-wheel-drive version is a smooth rider with the low-profile 15" tires giving it just the right stance. Flowmaster mufflers and true dual exhaust were added to give it just the right sound when on the gas.

The rest of the drivetrain is factory original with a 350 small block with a four barrel carb and a 700R overdrive tranny. The only thing missing was the optional third seat, but that will soon be remedied. A 2000 Tahoe was kind enough to donate its third row seats. They are actually two seperate buckets that can mount right next to each other to make a small bench. These will hopefully be installed over the winter when the Suburban is in storage.

Thanks for visiting the official web presence of the KJM Annual Car Show. If you aren't very familiar with what goes on here, let me let you know what you are in for.

You will see weekly updates about cool car news.

If you can managed to squeeze in one visit a week, you will see articles about muscle cars, hot rods, and cruisers. You will see reports from the last several car shows of the season. You will see updates, on the event calender, of where you need to be to see these events in person.

And finally, you will see pics of each and every vehicle from our Second Annual Show.

On to some news...

A few months ago, I reported on the Noble M400 or N400 or whatever they called it then. If you remember, it was a company from Florida who takes a British chassis and puts in the motor of your choosing.

I think they have really done it now. Meet the Noble M600. They put more room under the hood and have decided on one engine for all to enjoy: a Volvo 4.4 V8 with a pair of turbos hanging off the front.

You can look up the performance specs of the 400 model, but they are nothing compared to this new version: 650 horsepower...

...225 mph...0-60 in 3.0 seconds.

One thing that more and more hi-po auto companies are doing is allowing separate power settings.

In 1990, Chevy put a system on their new-for-that-year top-of-the-line Corvette ZR-1. There was a key on the dash that allowed fuel injectors to be turned on and off. Full power was 385 horse, and lower settings were there for less experienced drivers.

BMW has a system like this, and so does the new Noble. With the twist of a knob, you can dial in 450, 550, or 650 horsepower. Being a driver's driver, at first this offends me, but then again, driving a high powered, rear wheel drive car in the rain can be and exciting experience for all the wrong reasons.

When it comes right down to it, you only really need about 300 horse to get into some trouble. And did I mention the Noble M600 doesn't have antilock brakes, electronic skid protection, and the traction control can be turned off?

Jay Leno was recently quoted lamenting the death of the super car. I hope he sees one of these and changes his mind.

My second favorite car show of the season (ours being the first of course) is the Muscle Car Show put on by the Land of Lakes GTO club. I was there. Were you?

...with a few Boss 302's mixed in.

And the weather was good.

Construction and the Car Show

If you have driven around Becker lately, you will see many signs proclaiming road closures and road construction. Rest assured that the road leading to the show is is open now and will be open the day of the show.

To get to Becker Baptist Church, take Sherburne Avenue (old hwy 23) north off of highway 10 by the Shell gas station. Follow the signs to the show on your left about half a mile up.

Show Info sent out and a Cobra story

Now, on to a Cobra story...

I am a fan of car magazines, and from time to time I get to read a few issues I don't normally subscribe to. Last week I was going through some Car and Driver issues from a couple years back, and this story caught my eye.

I know Carroll Shelby's story well. I want to go to his shop in Los Vegas, see the museum, maybe buy a real Cobra some day...I can dream, right? Anyway, one of the more interesting parts of the Cobra story are the Super Snakes. Carroll's personal Cobra was the twin-supercharged 427, auto transmission model you can see in the picture. It has been through many hands and will hopefully live a long life. The last time it was sold, it went for $5,500,000.00. That is a lot of Honda Civics if you ask me.

The second was built for one of Carroll Shelby's friends: Bill Cosby. If you google Cosby talking about his Cobra, you will find clips of his older stand-up comedy routines where he talks about what it was like driving a car like that: 2100 lbs, 800 hp. As you may already know, he sold it before he went backwards into a tree at 180 mph. Unfortunatley, the person he sold it so did something like that and destroyed that second Supersnake. Accodording to the article, this second one may or may not still be around in one form or another.

This legandary Cobra story is something I have heard more than once, but I felt this article did a good job in telling the shortest version of the story while still covering all the details.

I know seeing a Cobra kit car is becoming a more common event at shows and cruises, but if you get the chance to see a real one, stop and think, and admire.

Back to the 50s

The Minnesota Street Rod Association spends 364 days organizing the largest car show in the state., and I have learned to count on two things when going to it: the weather is not always on your side (at least for the past couple years) and it's easy to get spoiled by the cars.

Back to the Fifties, or BTTF as it is sometimes referred to, fills up the Minnesota Fair Grounds like like a steamroller of automotive goodness. You can find dealers of cheap trinkets or twenty thousand dollar roller frames. You will see rusty rods with their temporary tags fresh from the day before sitting next to lead sleds with insured values close to that of my house.

But you do get spoiled.

If I, or you, or anyone, saw any one of these machines out in the real world, going down some back country road, bumping and jumping down the freeway, it is like a treat, a special goody bag just for you.

But do you get spoiled.

Maybe next year I will take a break from the big show and just go to the cruise spots during the weekend nights. It's cheaper than the price of admission as long as I can deal with the traffic--but that's what we do--we like the traffic.

As long as there's a few nice things to look at among the regular traffic.

Two more events to think about

Beginning tonight, and continuing each and every Tuesday night for the rest of the summer, you can cruise on over to A & W in Big Lake for their National Cruise Night.

If you didn't know, there is a newer A & W in town on the far east side of town right off of highway 10.

They advertise giving a discount to customers arriving in classic cars and trucks. Does anyone care to try this?

Also, this Saturday, there is a new show in St. Cloud to go to.

Top Notch Auto Repair is holding their first Meet and Greet Car Show at their shop.

So, we all have been busy, but we need to make an effort to get out there and support the shows--if you don't go, they won't show.

On Sunday, the Frankensteiners are hosing another show at Broadway Pizza in Elk River. A little mayhem may ensue, but they have the sickest rods on this side of the Snake River.

Your muscle car, hot rod, or cruiser can get in for $5 and guest admission is free. Try to make it.

As you can see from the link to the poster above, we have finalized the pricing for our show this year.

If you are bringing a vehicle to show, that machine will cost you $10. If you are coming to see these prized machines, you will be able to get in for free, but the suggested donation will be $5 for each adult.

We would like you to come and see what we have to offer, and if you feel like you want to donate to the scholarship fund, please give what you can.

Also, the events are being added fast and furiously. The number of new shows seem to be outweighing the number of old shows going away.

Get out there and see something!

SMS = Steve Saleen's new company

If you haven't, you must check out the sweet machines SMS puts together in their shop. Here are a few specs on the new '10 Mustang hopped-up by SMS: 612 rear wheel horsepower. This figures out to 720 at the crank. That should be enough to get the party started.

What is SMS you ask? Steve Saleen left his own company two or three years ago to start something new. (His reasons behind this decision are detailed all over automotive websites--go look if you need to know the nitty gritty.) He offers packages for the new Challanger and now the 2010 Stang.

Within a week or two, all of last year's show participants will be sent a preregistration form for the '09 show coming up this August.

I hope you will take the time to see fill out your form and send it back to reserve your spot as well as qualify for the specials that you can only access via preregistration.

The show line-up is taking shape nicely with two additions to the '08 show.

There will now be an "Anything with Wheels Alley" and a "Kid Car Coloring Contest."

If you have a nice old tractor, a cool motorcycle, an awesome three-wheeler, or anything else that can get you from one place to another with speed and/or style, there will be a row saved especially for you. Think about what you might want to bring. If your not sure about what might qualify for this, drop me a note, and we can discuss.

Kids love to color. The new Kid Car Coloring Contest is a great addition to some of the other family activities we had going last year. Prizes will be given to the best of the best. See the flier for information on the different age groups. If you have questions about this, feel free to drop me a line.

One local show down and another in trouble

Five years ago, I was in St. Cloud, waiting in line at Bonanza I'm guessing, and I noticed more than one hot rod/muscle car/cruiser heading down Division Street. I stopped and looked again. More were coming. I couldn't believe it. I was in the middle of the first Bad Boyz rolling car show and cruise.

They gathered at the Shopko east parking lot earlier in the night and began to roll as soon as the sun went down. The police were out, but seemed to be looking the other way when there was a minor exhibition of speed. It was heaven.

For the last two years, the annual Bad Boyz car show moved to north to Brainerd as was able to have some activities at the BIR drag strip.

The show's sponsors recently announced they will not be able to host the show this summer putting the future of the show in doubt. For more information, go to their website: http://www.badboyzcarshow.com/index.php

The Anoka River Run is, in my humble opinion, the greatest weekly show and cruise in the state. Last year they celebrated their seventh year under their second 'owners' (if a show can have such a thing).

I received an email yesterday about the show. Below is an excerpt.

We HAVE the BEST show in the state with the BEST people. We don't want to lose that. Going every other weekend is not the ideal option. It isn't consistent for the drivers, nor is it for the public not to mention the businesses. Everyone stands to lose here. Once every other weekend is better than nothing, but the IDEAL choice is to continue the way it has been in the past and offer the city council options they may not have considered and to see how we can assist them in assuring that this show continues to be the BEST show in the state. Last year ARR and the City of Anoka entertained 200,000 paying visitors.

The city is looking at making the show a biweekly affair instead of every weekend. The show is having a hard time reaching an agreement with the city council of Anoka for fees related to using the public space each weekend. There is a public council meeting scheduled for Monday evening, March 16th @ 7pm to vote on the car show. They meet @ the City Hall Council Chambers in Anoka 2015 First Ave (it is not at the court house).

If you can make it (I teach Monday nights), it would go a long way to showing your support for what you believe in.

Cars are a way of life for some people, not just a hobby. Others have a hard time understanding that.

So what made last year's show great...

Growing up, I think I ingested as much exhaust fumes as air much of the time. I was brought to many car shows, dirt oval races, and drag races. As I got older, I went to more car shows, dirt oval races, drag races, motorcycle races, and snowmobile races. Now that I am officially a grown-up with kids of my own, I take them to as many motorsport events that their little ears and legs will take.

And with the inaugural Kenny Johnson Memorial Car how behind us, I take pride in having my friends, family, and own children help in planning the Second Annual Kenny Johnson Memorial Car Show. Not only do my kids get to go to another car show, they get to help out with it, help plan it, help tell their friends about it.

Last year, I loved the cars, the people, the food, the awards, the music.

It would be nice to have had more people, more cars, more everything, but all good things have to start somewhere, right?

The planning for this year's show is shifting into overdrive. It is sad to here about other shows in the area having trouble making it another year (see the above post), but the KJM Car Show will be going strong for years to come, getting bigger and better than ever.

Start spreading the word, start marking your calender: Saturday, August 15th. Even if you have to drive on four flats--you should make it. I'll help you change the tires after the show.

And remember, all the proceeds to to helping kids make it to camp during the summer. Having a great time, seeing some great machines, and helping some kids--what more is there to like?

One more thing: if you add a few stripes to a new Stang, it just looks right. Here you go.

2010 Camaro's are on the way

Here are some pics of the new '10 Chevy Camaro's getting ready to be shipped.

Someone just happens to live next to the plant they are being built at in Oshawa, Ontario, and they just happened to have a zoom lense to grab a few shots of these.

What is interesting is that the official produciton date, listed right from GM, isn't until March 16, 2009. These will probably be press and test vehicles. Now I really wish I had proper press credentials.

The Best Use for the Ford 3.0 DOHC Duratec V-6 Ever

I am not a huge fan of the exotic-looking cars, but this is one I would love to take for a test drive.

The Rossian Q1 is built in Florida and sold without an engine/transmission for a little under $70,000. But if you want one you can actually drive, for a little over $90,000, they will sell you one that's ready to go.

The Q1 is their newest model.

The Ford motor is given better pistons, more radical cams, a souped-up fuel injection system, and of course--not one turbo, but two. The stock engine will reliably put out 200 horse, but will all the upgrades done here, you can expect 425-450 horsepower.

Performance with this drivetrain is impressive: 0-60 in 3.3 seconds, quarter mile track speed of over 120, and a top end of 185.

Another particpant at the first annual KJM Car Show rode his entry instead of driving it.

This 1971 John Deere bicycle was owned by none only than the DJ who kept our guests at the show showered with good music: Dave Larkum. Dave loves banging through the three-speed transmission when he stomps his foot toward the floor, then the other foot, then back to the first, and so on.

I knew of John Deere bikes, but I can't say I ever remember actually seeing one. This may inspire a new trophy category for the next show: 'eco' or 'leg-powered.'

Gas Prices Down, Ford Plays with Trucks Again

If you get some time during this holiday season, take some time to look this up in Google: Ford F-150 SVT Raptor R.

Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT) has been around for some time. Originally called Special Vehicle Operations (SVO), they helped build the first factory turbo and intercooled Mustangs beginning in 1984, helped work with Yamaha to build a super high-output engine for everyone's favorite family hauler (1989 SHO Taurus), and more recently have concetrated on putting aftermarket parts together under their Ford Racing Performance Parts (FRPP) name.

The folks at Ford that brought you hi-po versions of more mundane cars (SVT Focus, SVT Contour) and traditional performance models (SVT Cobra Mustang, SVO Mustang, '07 Shelby) and even trucks (SVT F-150 Lightening) are putting together a test bed of sorts for off-road truck racing.

The 2010 Ford F-150 Raptor seems to be set to go on sale to the public. It won't feature all the racing improvements that the R version has (Supercharged engine, fully boxed frame with roll bars, etc.), but that is what many of the other SVT models got their start. They would build some crazy version just for racing or car shows, then bits and pieces would slowly find their way into the production version.

I'm not a huge fan of Ford Trucks, but this is starting to change my mind.

We will get back to more cars from our show next time, but the new Mustang is starting to take shape.

In 2010, Ford is giving it's 'new' Mustang a makeover. The new-new Chevy Camaro is on the way, and Ford doesn't want us to forget that it never killed our favorite pony car like Chevy did in 2002. Unless you remember when they almost did in the Mustang 1973-74 (the Pinto was going to be the next big thing). They almost did it again in 1986-87 (the Probe was the Mustang--it was front-wheel-drive and got better milage...). Anyway...

I love these spy photos. When I was in college, I would go hang out at the McStop on I-94 in St. CLoud all the time between classes. You would see the weirdest stuff there. Once I saw a fleet of Mercedes, all decked out in the same black car cover stuff held together with duct tape, with Euro lisense plates. They all pulled into the truck stop there, got diesel, wrote a few notes on their laptops, checked the fluids, and were back on the freeway. It was the middle of winter, and I guess they were doing some cold weather testing.

After that, it was one of this and two of those, three of something else. I would get to close to the car in the parking lot or at the pumps, and someone would hop in it and pull around the building while they are waiting. I never had a camera on me, but they looked a lot like what would pop up in the Motor Trend Spy photo section each and every month.

Below is an official spy pic of the '10 Stang. In the upper right of the pic, you can see a '99-'04 Mustang. They called this the New Edge body style. The '94 Mustang was the first new chassis for over ten years, and in '99 it was given new sheet metal. Underneath it was still the same, for the most part, but it ran the new modular engines exclusively. In '05, the chassis was all new again and given the name S-197. This is what is driving in the upper left. I'm not sure what it means, but it must be important.

These two pics are right from Ford, so they should be the closest as far as what it will really look like. If you ask me, the side prifile seems to have been tightened up a bit giving it a sharper, mose muscular look. I've seen the '05-'08 Steeda's and Saleen's, and they do about the same thing with their body kits. I'm liking this look.

The front end is starting to have more of a '71-'73 Mach 1 look. The honeycomb grill and the smaller running lights divided from the rest of the front with those grey vertical bars. The front also l has a little of the new GT-500 look with the clear covers over the headlings.

Here is a new GT-500 KR. Any similarities here?

It's getting colder out there. I hope your winter projects are off to a strong start. Mine aren't, but I'm not going to make any excuses.

A '55 Chevy Nomad: now when was the last time you saw one of these?

An early 60s Mopar with a Hemi--yes, it's a real one.

A Superbird: these are getting too valuable to drive. I let the owner know I appreciated him driving his retirement around. He told me not to bring that up to his wife...

A 1969 Farilane 500 drag racer. This original small block now has a big block, a roll cage, and has been featured in Car Craft. Sweet.

Here is the Fairlane's built 460 crate motor.

Our car show participant being featured this week is one of our show winners.

This 1958 Chevy Impala was the 'Best Street Rod' winner and is owned by Steve and Marilyn O.

They have owned this car since it was new back in '58 and have since added three two-barrel carbs to the 348 big-block.

They have done much of the work themselves through the years and try to get out and about when the weather is warm and the sun is shining. This is a completed car, and it looks great.

Some news, then a Chevelle

The last Anoka River Run Cruise was essentially rained out this past Saturday night. Thankfully, they have one more event (well, really two) coming up next weekend. Look at the calendar above and check out what is going on at the Anoka County fair grounds. This is looking like a great end-of-the-year blast for the whole family.

I expect to see you there.

Doug O. and his wife, Carmine, and son, Daniel, brought with this clean 1968 Chevy Chevelle. Under the hood resides a hot 355 small block. The tranny is a Powerglide that sends the juice to a 12 bolt rear complete with a 4.11 posi.

They have had this Chevelle for over fifteen years, but this is far from the end for Doug's muscle car. In the near, or possibly far future, an overdrive automatic and a bigger stroker motor are on the agenda.

Doug has worked on his own rides for years and wouldn't have it any other way. Doug is a great guy, and he even might lend a helping hand the next time you are dropping an engine or doing a valve job; unless he is doing one himself.

Classics by the Lake '08

Downtown Buffalo was alive with the smell of muscle cars, hot rods, and quite a few cruisers earlier today.

The events entitled 'Classics by the Lake' has been going on for at least the last two years and plans to continue on the first Saturday morning of September into the future. The local Ford dealer helped out many other local business organize the show and get the word out to ensure a good showing.

I counted around 200 cars and was very impressed with the quality and variety. Here are some examples:

This 1955 Chevy had some of the nicest paint and body work or the show.

The world needs more Cobra's out and about on the roads. I wonder if he has an extra set of rims for this one for the snow tires.

This old Ford retractable hardtop is exactly like the one a relative from southern Minnesota had back in the day. It was an amazing thing to see, and hear, the top go through the transformation process, but the battery technology then wasn't very forgiving. If he would run it up and down more than a few times with the engine off, he was stuck and looking for a jump.

For most people, a new Corvette is fast enough. Most people. Not this guy though. Under the hood of this 2000 Vette is a stroker motor, a supercharger, and a sniff of nitrous. He claims a little over 1000 rear-wheel horsepower. I'm not going to argue, are you?

Lastly, we have a 1957 Thunderbird. This is a special factory hot-rod model with a pair of four-barrel carbs and a hot cam. They made a super limited edition T-bird in '57 that was supercharged. I haven't seen one of those yet.

They had a cruise after the show to a few small towns in the area which ended at the local Culver's. What a day, what a day.

Tim is one of Kenny's car buddies from way back. Tim is planning to bring out one of his long-term projects for next year's show. Tim--we are going to hold you to it.

This is the last time our fine organization will change (adjust) its name.

During the show, I spoke with many car guys and gals who didn't consider their vehicles to be a muscle car or a street rod.

So, with deep thoughts, the change was made to Minnesota Muscle Cars, Street Rods, and Cruisers. This helped satisfy a few drivers out there.

And now, we have what you see at the top: Minnesota Muscle Cars, Hot Rods, and Cruisers. The term 'hot rod' has much less baggage and a little more class than 'street rod.'

So, there we go...

Here is our second featured vehicle from the 1st Annual KJM Car Show.

Nathan B. took some time away from working on his Farmall tractors and his '66 Charger (surely to be featured in next year's show, right?), to bring out his 1991 Ford Mustang GT convertible.

Nathan has owned this white pony for almost ten years, and in that time he has added a sweet sounding exhaust and some steeper rear-end gears. He doesn't mind that automatic shifting the gears for him, especially with 3.73's.

When Nathan bought this low-mile beauty, he knew that only his brother would be wrenching on it. He only takes it out on only the nicest days during the summer.

You see a lot of fox-body mustangs out there, and many would agree that the 1991-93's are the nicest looking. I can only imagine what Nathan plans in the future to make this look, and sound, even better.

We will be featuring each of the vehicles that made it to the show beginning with this award winner.

The first will be Dave S. from Becker. He brought his 1969 Pontiac GTO. Dave has owned his Goat for over two years. While many muscle car guys are always working on their rides, Dave considers this to be a completed project--more time for something else, right?

This orange beauty has a 400 cubic inch motor, an automatic transmission, and a 3.73 gear rear end. This is a Ram-Air 400 which makes more than 360 horse from the factory.

The only change that Dave made was switching out the 4-speed manual and adding the automatic. He actually drives the car and doesn't care for sitting in traffic with that heavy clutch always pushed in.

Did I mention it was an award winner? This '69 GTO was voted "Kid's Choice" by the twelve and under crowd at the show. I know my oldest daughter liked the car--especially the color.

Time for a change. You will see some different things on the top and bottom, and in the middle I guess, of this blog.

The name Minnnesota Muscle Cars and Street Rods has officially changed to Minnesota Muscle Cars, Street Rods, and Cruisers. There are lots of cool rides out there that don't fit into the muscle car or the street rod label, but I think would line up nicely under the cruiser title. Of course this means that we have at least one more trophy to give out next year.

By the way, here was what they looked like:

I have also included two new links at the bottom of the site. One thing I have neglected is sharing more information about what the goals for the show are. One is to celebrate Kenny's life instead of mourning his death. Another is to get more young people, who normally wouldn't be able to go to camp, to be able to afford to go by raising money for a scholarship fund at Camp Lenanon. The Camp Lebanon Blog has updates from the everyday events, and the Camp Lebanon Home is a link to the main site with all the information you could ever need.

I am working on a surprise addition to the site in the near future.

Mark your calendars now for the 2nd Annual KJM Car Show. That's right ladies and gents. We had so much fun, we are going to do it again, and again, and then again after that. We have some great ideas on how to make it bigger and better than ever.

So, were you there? While it was hard to count as people went in and out, there were about 75-100 guests there looking at the cars/trucks. We had 24 entries up for voting. Everything from a bone-stock Chevy to a John Deere bike were entered.

Next year we will be expanding a few more categories.

I was up getting stuff ready until about 2 am the night before and was up at 6 am the morning of the show getting the final details wrinkle-free. Now we know what works, and what doesn't.

One thing I was surprised at was that I passed out a whole pile of car show fliers over the summer, but the best 'advertising' I did was to put free ads in the local papers in their 'events' section. These brought in almost half the cars to the show.

Well, we have a few more ideas as to how to get more people out and to raise more money for Camp Lebanon ( http://www.camplebanon.org/ ). Go check it out.

Over the next several weeks, the owners who brought out their sweet rides will be featured here on the website. So, check back once or twice a week to learn more about those who made it to the show.

The show is nearly here. It seems only a few days ago when this was nothing but an idea, but here we are--three days away.

The food has been ordered, the signs have been painted, the paperwork has been organized.

So far this week, I have fielded a few calls each day from local hot rodders wanting to know more about the show, where the show exactly is, when the cruise is beginning after the show...

So here is a quick recap.

The show officially runs from 10 am until 2 pm. The show car entrance will be on the south side of the Becker Baptist Church with the guest entrance being on the west side. Signs will point the way from HWY 10 in Becker to the show. Show car registration begins at about 9 am. Voting for the three awards will be closed at 1 pm with a ceremonial presentation at 1:30 pm.

The cruise down to the Anoka River Run will meet back at the church parking lot at about 4 pm and will leave shortly there after.

There will be hot dogs, pop, water, chips, and cookies available for sale--it may end up being the greatest lunch you have ever had!

So, what will I personally be taking to the show? You will see my '85 Suburban trailering my wife's '57 Chevy wagon.

The Burb is a nearly bone-stock cruiser that gets the family to each show and cruise in style. The '57 is a project car my wife picked up last fall. It needs 'some' work, but there isn't much cooler than these old wagons, right?

The one thing no one can control, the weather, still looks good. We go on rain or shine. If there is a tornado, we will move the show to my parents house since tornado's don't strike twice in the same place, right?

In between dentist appointments for the kids and cleaning up tornado debris, a few more car show related things have been accomplished.

There will be three trophy's awarded this year: one for best muscle car, one for best street rod, and one for kid's choice.

Everyone at the show will receive a ballot to vote on the above categories, and the awards will be presented about 1:30 pm.

This is shaping up to be a great day. Tell all your friends.

The upcoming First Annual KJM Car Show now officially has a DJ. Dave Larcom has agreed to be the audio presence of our show coming up on August 16th.

Dave is a radio professional who just happens to own and operate the only radiator and exhaust shop I will go to. Dave can be heard on weekends on KRWC 1360 AM out of Buffalo. If you want to get a quote for a job, stop by DL's Radiator and Exhaust in Buffalo, just west of 25 on 55.

I made it to a few shows this past week.

Last weekend, I hit the Back to the 50s. It was too busy--like it usually is. The road construction in the area doesn't help much either. There were about 12,000 cars, and I was able to see about half of them before they all took off into the sunset.

I made it to the Becker car show yesterday, and the Rockin' Rogers show, too. These two were their first annual shows. This summer seems to be the summer for first annual shows, doesn't it?

Yes, you heard it here first. There was a planning meeting earlier today to work out all the details for the first annual KJM Carshow.

ANyway, I spent the last several weeks finishing up one school year and starting another summer program. I also hit a few shows" the All-Ford show at the St. Paul Ford Plant and the first annual show at Chico's in Becker. They were well attended and had some great examples of classic muscle you just don't see much anymore.

I have two more weeks of summer school, then the another new baby, then start teaching night school.

After another party we are hosting out of our garage this coming weekend, I will be finishing the insides and get off and running on getting the '85 GT back on the street.

On a side note, I was contacted about a show coming up in Hamburg sometime later this month. I will be looking for more details, and they will be added to the events above when I confirm this.

WHere will you be going? After yesterday's bad weather and hail shut down most of the cruisers hopes and dreams for Anoka, one can go to the all-Ford Apple Valley show or the Ford Plant show today.

Shows from last week

Last week I made it to Elk RIver Culver's and the Broadway Pizza Frankensteiners fest.

The Culver's run was nice. Lots of local rods and local muscle that sometimes you see, and sometimes you don't see. I have seen top dollar rods and super-rare muscle at cruise-ins like this that you never see at the more official car shows that last for hours and you have to pay admission and you have to register for...

Some guys and gals don't want to bring their street machine to a place where they have to stay--maybe they want to get out of dodge before the trophies are being presented. Makes sense, doesn't it?

The Broadway Pizza show was amazing. You would never guess such a variety would be in one place. A row of the sickest rat rods next to a mid-70s Chevette that was mint. A row of custom bikes sitting next to a row of tri-five Chevy's. They had a loud pipe contest, a burnout contest, and live music on a flat bed trailer. What a trip.

5/14/08 Albertville Culver's Report

It has been a while since I graced the parking lot of the Culver's of Albertville. Now I remember, though, it sure is small.

The store itself is just as big as any other, but for whatever reason, the lot seems short on space. No matter, the show must go on!

It was glorious weather and enough fine rods and muscle were there. I have a soft spot for Fairmonts--there was a nice stocker there, about a '78 two-door, just ripe for a dash of the sleeper treatment.

What do I think was pretty sweet there, you ask? WHat tickled my fancy more than anything else? Well here it be: (Blogger doesn't like images right now-I will put it up soon).

I don't mean to be street rod heavy in my choosings, but there was only one Mustang. Maybe next time.

This Saturday evening is the first Anoka River Run. I plan to be there. Will you be going?

Ok, on Wednesday, we have the next Culver's cruise-in--Albertville this time. And on Saturday, we have what looks to be the first Anoka River Run cruise-in.

Mr. Weatherman says rain tomorrow, but clear on Wednesday. We will see.

Here is a thought for you: how many of you look at every car you pass on the road. Well, maybe not every car, but most cars?

I am always looking for something interesting to look at. I think I have rubbed off of the boy a bit.

Each day when he rides the bus home from school, he makes a mental record of what he sees and tells me what he saw. He points out the Ford Contours (like daddy's car), the number, color, and era of each and every Mustang (daddy's favorite car), and any cool street rods. When my oldest daughter gets her rides to and from preschool, she keeps track of the number and color of all the monster trucks she sees.

They both have a thing for the new Chargers and Magnums, too.

Well, looking at the clock has reminded me of what time my alarm will go off in the morning.

5/7/08 Monticello Culvers report

The first Culver's cruise of the season has come and gone. It was good. I brought the wife, the kids, and the father. I tried to park in a reserved section and was asked to move since... You guessed it...

The Ghostbuster's Car was coming. And the General Lee.

Can't beat that, can you?

There was a nice group of older and newer, expensive and cheap.

So, what did I think was the sweetest ride? Here it is.

I'm thinking about a '32 or '34 Ford coupe. It has the classic street rod look with a bit of rat rod splashed on for good measure. The paint is specially aged to give the aged look, and it really worked. The interior was cleaner than my Ford Contour was when I bought it new. The wheels--the big and littles--it doesn't get any better than that, does it?

Of course, it doesn't hold that many car seats...

I was there, were you?

Probably not. I made an appearance in the rain soaked first Thursday night cruise at the Big Lake Legion. They had a section of the parking lot roped off and signs out by the highway for all to see.

One problem, there wasn't much to see.

I looked at the two trucks: one early-50s Chevy and one mid-50s Ford. One was chopped and slammed. The other was visually stock with the exception of chrome wheels. Maybe nest week will be better--better weather anyway.

Someone asked me, "what's up with the pics?" Good question. Depending on what time I upload these posts, Blogger is busy helping everyone else, and I get put to the back of the line.

I'm sure I'm not the only car guy/gal who feels the pinch.

Now the pinch currently being discussed isn't the one at the pump when gassing up. And it isn't the pinch when the credit card statement comes back with the latest round of Year One or Summit transactions.

The pinch I'm talking about is the clock and the calendar. There are only so many hours in the day. The weekend is only two days long.

When I get home my husbandly and fatherly responsibilities are on the top of the list. Sure I have the screenplay I am pecking away on, and the half-dozen unfinished novels, but that topic is for another post. When it comes right down to it, I really don't have that many hours each week to devote to car stuff.

But I am getting smarter at using those hours.

I can bring the family with to cruises and car shows. This meets all the father/husband/car guy needs I might be having--at least for a couple of hours, anyway. Now that my oldest is getting older, and the next youngest is getting more eager, I am working at trying to figure out how to get them involved with what daddy likes to do in his 'free' time. It might be building shelves for the garage, sweeping the garage, holding a wrench in the garage. There is a theme here, can't you tell?

Also, I have heard back from the Anoka RIver Run people (what's up Mimi!), the Hooked on Classics people (what's up Nathan!), and the hot rod art guru himself: SInclair (what's up Nick!).

A few more details will be following about the car show in 8/16. We are looking at categories, t-shirts, events, and what food we should sell. Any thoughts? ANyone.... Bueller... Bueller...

the Anoka River Run cruise

As you can see, the dates for the Anoka River Run cruise have been added for May through September.

This is one of the more interesting cruises I have been to in the past couple years. In one night, you can see a Model T sitting next to a '79 Cutlass with twenty inch rims. And everyone seems to get along, amazing.

The idea for August 16th is to have the car show in Becker in the morning and a group cruise to Anoka shortly after. The show is set to go from 10am-2pm with the RIver Run set for 5pm-dusk. I am waiting to here back from the Anoka officials to see what time cars can start parking.

Also, I've been doing a little Ford flathead research. It just doesn't seem right to build a rod without one, does it? There are a few parts here and there I think I can cobble together to make one run--when, I don't know, but they sure are cool to look at.

I also am beginning to build my own engine dolly. I want a quick and easy way to move a stored engine without dragging it around on a tire or wooden crate or you name it. Here is one cool way to build one:

(don't) let it snow

I guess my lawn likes the moisture, but enough already, ok?

Looking at the world of muscle cars and street rods, it seems like there are two schools of thought: form or function.

Personally, I would rather have something be fast and reliable than have a two or three or five thousand dollar paint job. I want something built to be driven. Would I love a Boss 429? Sure, but I would have to drive the thing. Would I love a Hemi Cuda? You betcha, but I would drive the thing.

Would I be nervous every time I drove something like that? Yes, and that's not what I want to feel when I am trying to enjoy myself out and about on the road.

A car/truck can be nice without being perfect. One of the few events that reinforce this is the BIR Show and Go where the cars are admired for their beauty one day and admired for their quarter-mile time the next. This is a good way to keep things in perspective, I think. (I haven't placed any BIR dates on the event calendar yet--anyone interesting me putting these up?)

On the other hand, I can't wait to get my first rat rod up and running. All I need is tires that hold air, brakes that stop, a tranny that shifts, and an engine that starts. The more holes in the roof/floor/fenders the better. I would have to wear a ski mask and goggles on a day like today, but it sure would be cool.

So, does anyone have a current project?

Well here is mine.

This '85 Mustang GT needs a clutch (slips in the rain), brake work (now it has none), and some interior work (I took a door panel off to replace a power window motor and had to order new plastic push-buttons right from Ford).

It is an original pony with a ton of miles. When I used it as a daily-driver, I could get 22 mpg when behaving. The five-speed manual has a 0.68:1 fifth. It will cruise at 70 mph at 1700 rpm.

The last thing I need to order is a new 10.5" flywheel. I have the new FRPP King Cobra clutch kit, but it wasn't until '86 where the bigger clutch was used.

A quick recap of '85 highlights: first year of the heavy-duty T-5 (it was called the 'world class' model), last year for the 4 bbl (factory Holley), and first year for the roller cam. I have always loved the four-headlight look. I think the '85-'86 look the best out of all the '79-'86 early fox bodies.

Driving home today was the first time this spring that passed more than one nice car on the road that has just been taken out of storage. Seeing those monster 50s fins in my rearview as they pass gets me thinking about all the upcoming shows and cruises.

I still think it might be a bit early--that pesky salt takes a while to get washed off--especially since it was just dumped on last Friday.

Here ye go:

This Ford Pantera was similar to a few other cars that used a chassis from Europe and a drive-train from Detroit: the Bricklin using a GM parts and the Sunbeam TIger and AC Cobra that were Powered by Ford. The Pantera used Ford's 351C and a ZF transaxle.

How bomb is that. I think it's so bomb, it is atomic!

Keep your calendars open...

So here we go.

Kenny Johnson's birthday is on August 14th. The tentative date for the First Annual Ken Johnson Memorial Minnesota Muscle Car and Street Rod Car Show is going to be the following Saturday: August 16th. The next day, Sunday the 17th, is the St. Cloud car show.

If this date sticks and works for everyone, this would be easy to remember. It would always be the day before the St. Cloud car show.

The first car I ever drove on a regular basis was a 1967 Ford Fairlane four-door sedan. It was in the rusty, but trusty category. The 200 straight-six was great in the winter since it didn't have enough power to spin the tires even on ice. The cruise-o-matic began to dislike third gear and shifted better when done manually. Did I tell you about how many times it jumped out of park on me? The manual choke was a great cruise control, and the non-power brakes took two feet when doing anything over 25 mph. I had carpet squares covering the rust holes in the floor. Good old Rays carpet.

Man I loved that car. This pic is of someone else's '67 from Little Falls a couple of years back. Mine is more of a parts car now...

Shows and cruises all around

It seems like this year is going to be a sweet year for those little cruise nights that many of you have gotten so used to going to. I love them: no trophies, no admission, close to home. With what the price of gas will be, I won't be taking my '85 Suburban, with kids in tow, to many cruise nights too far away.

The dates and times I focused in on for the Event Calendar are those nearer instead of farer. I am still waiting to hear back form Anoka to see when and where their weekly weekend cruise will be.

If you come across any other local cruise nights/shows, let me know. I will add a few I find here and there.

One quick hint--if you click on the agenda view, you can get a list to print out--that's what I did!

As you can see, there is now a Google calendar here. Each auto-related event that I come across will get a link on the day it is going to happen. If you click on an event, a small window will open and give you extra info about when and where it takes place.

The plan is to have a post about each event in the week leading up to it. If you plan to go, please leave a comment about what time you plan to be there and if you plan to be a participant or are just going to look at all the sweet rides.

If you plan to have a car/truck there, let us know what it will be and what class (if applicable) you will be registering in.

As the show season gets rolling, I will be doing profiles on a few of your cars here on the blog. You will get your own posting with pictures or your ride and any other information you would like to share about it.

Why does Minnesota Muscle Cars (and Street Rods) Exist?

The summer of 2008 will have one less Mustang-driving, muscle car enthusiast making twin black stripes down the road.

Kenny Johnson, my uncle, passed away this past fall. He leaves behind a wife, two brothers, one sister, his mom, and many other friends and family.

In order to properly honor his love for all things automotive, including his beloved Mustangs, the Becker Baptist Church will be proudly hosting the first annual Central Minnesota Muscle Car and Street Rod show and cruise.

The show will be on a Saturday morning, on a date to be determined, with a cruise to the weekly Anoka cruise.

This family oriented show will have events for all ages.

The event is free, but donations are encouraged. All proceeds go to the Kenny Johnson Memorial Camp Fund for Camp Lebanon.

More information will follow including pictures from past events.
